2012 Nexus 7 really slow

I have the latest Kit Kat installed (which supposedly shrinks down the fat of the OS and makes older device work faster with it)

however, it seems it just gets slower with every update. I'm sure I can reboot daily but that defeats the purpose, you shouldn't have to do that with IOS or Android correct? Heck my Iphone 4S is 3+ years old running the latest IOS7 and I never have to reboot.

Or is it just that Android is just that fragmented?

I hate to say it, but the "2012" nexus 7 has had a lot of issues for a lot of people. Also, many have said kitkat made things worse for them on the older n7. There may be no hope

Asus used crappy NAND modules in the 2012 version, which because unstable when you dropped below 3gb of storage space. The tablet would slow down because it lacked TRIM support, so the blocks would continue to fill up and it would take longer and longer to do read/write functions. Resetting the tablet would help for a while, but in the end the tablet would slow down again.

With 4.3, TRIM support was added and should help a bit with the poor memory modules ASUS used. 4.4 requires less active memory on Google apps and system files, but that doesn't mean that 4.4 will magically correct every app in the Play Store. What apps are you using that are memory hogs? (One guess would be Facebook).

Remember, you only have 1gb of RAM. You need to streamline those apps that constantly run and eat up both bandwidth and memory (cough *Facebook*cough)

At this point, in order to rule out all possible issues, I would recommend a complete factory reset (that doesn't mean hitting that stupid little button in settings. That is not a real factory reset.)

You need to wipe the entire tablet of everything and reinstall from scratch. There is a very simple way to do this via web/fast boot entries from a command terminal or the noon method via WugFresh Nexus Toolkit. The toolkit does everything for you. Your choice.

After you do this, you shouldn't have any more issues.

yeah, My N7 was running great until 4.2 update. It was slowing down as hell. It is improved quite a bit with 4.3. I did a factory reset with 4.3 and now running 4.4.2 stock. The performance of the N7 is quite snappy now.

I agree factory reset will probably solve the problem for you.

Maybe there is something up with your device. My 2012 Nexus 7 never has force closes. Youtube is really slow at launching but I think that is just up to the app.

Have you tried factory resetting. Also reflash the factory images if you know how to do that. Make sure you back up everything you need off of the tablets.

I'm not really sure what to do with it. I guess I could get like $20 for it on eBay but that's hardly worth the trouble. Probably just gonna wind up in the trash.

Please don't tell me all you have done is gone into settings and clicked Factory Reset? I assume you have tried adb/fastboot and reloaded the factory image and all the various binaries?

It'd make a good test system for Ubuntu Touch.

I have heard many people with the 2012 model say that doing the full factory reset and wiping everything is what helps most with this slow issue. I have a tf700t that I use sparingly because it suffers the same slowness as the nexus 2012 so I feel your pain. Because of this we have shied away from Asus tablets in the last year, too many other good options are available now as the tablet market continues to grow and improve overall.

KitKat helped my Nexus 7

It's weird how Kit Kat has affected the 2012 Nexus 7 in different ways. I bought back in August 2012 I admit it got a bit slow up til 4.2.2. Kit Kat however made my tablet faster and more responsive like never before. I only have about 2.7GB left since I have the 8GB model. I have nova launcher running, 3 games, and no live wallpaper. Mostly use it to browse online, social media, and reading Google Play magazines.
