Hi,

I have a 2012 quad core mac pro. I was wondering whether a 6 core w3680 can be used to upgrade it. Also, what can be done to improve the performance of the current set up. its a quad xeon 3.2 ghz with 6 gb of ram and ati 5770 gpu. working with photoshop file as large as 820 mb cripples the system. I also get large page out files, does that mean I need more ram? Guess i've asked a lot of questions and thanks in advance.

Surely....

the page ins can be reduced with more RAM. Other common suggestion is adding a SSD to speed up boot/launch times. Processor upgrades? Daunting to me, but a lot of threads here making hard to be specific. So, do a search. Lots of good material are right here.

I've got same machine, left vid card as 5770, put two ssd in raid 0 for boot/app, 2 caviar black in raid 0 for data, 24 gb ram, USB 3 PCIe card, used for lr4 and
photoshop, works great. Couple of other drives for boot clones.

I bought a Mac Pro 2010 (same thing as the 2012) and dropped a W3690 processor in it, plus more RAM and some SSDs. That's it, it became a six core beast.

Simple, more RAM.

Fixed that for you.:p

CPU upgrade

Thanks guys, you are the best. So i guess i actually can put in a hex core cpu such as the w3690/w3680, add more ram and ssd to make this thing a real workhorse. For now though, I'll increase the ram to at least 24gb and put in ssd and see how it works for me.

Yep

I bought my quad core back in 2009. Earlier this year my applecare ran out (0 issues with my mac pro over 3 years knock on wood :) ) and just now I completed my 2013 refresh

Now I have:
2010 mac pro with 3680 six core
32GB 1333Mhz RAM
GTX 680 card driving 3 x 24" monitors

This machine flies. One more upgrade left is to get 6Gb sata connections and possibly usb 3.0 card.

Can't really do this with mini or imac thats why I went for MP back in 2009
