I wouldn't go as far as to say that a 2016 dual-core Mac mini would be faster than a 2012 quad-core. But, it'll probably be really close, not to mention that it would have many generations better graphics (though still not very powerful compared to dGPUs).
 
I'm holding on to my personal and 6 work 2012 i7 Mini Servers, each upgraded with a Samsung 850 Pro (512GB +1TB stock HD in my personal and dual 1TB SSDs in RAID 0 in the work units, used as rendering machines). I'd like to see BF compare an upgraded 2012 quad-core against the newer Minis...

Oh, and mine are paid for! :D
