I recently bought a late 2012 i7 mini which is having problems waking up. I upgraded to 16gb of memory, and am booting from an external SSD in a USB3 case. When the computer wakes from sleep, it takes a very long time to reestablish an internet connection. I have never had this problem with previous Macs. Also I quite often get the spinning beach ball especially in Apple Mail on reawakening. The only thing I can do at that point is shut the computer down and reboot it. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what might be causing this behavior. Thanks for any help.

VERY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:
Which external enclosure are you using?
What is the controller chip inside it?
Some external USB3 enclosures (and USB/SATA docks) use a Lucent controller chip that can have problems with sleep.
I believe you need an enclosure/dock that has either an
ASMedia 1051e controller chip
or an
ASMedia 1053 controller chip.
This reminds me of the early days of firewire, when some users were reporting similar problems when trying to connect firewire devices -- and when "the controller chip of preference" became the Oxford 911.

I just checked and yes that option was checked. I did uncheck it. Is that likeely to have caused the problem?
