Since 2013 this machine hasn’t skipped a beat. I could theoretically keep going with it. My daughter would benefit from a desktop and I feel like updating.

I can’t decide between a Mini and a iMac.

I assume a very good 4K or 5k monitor may outlast the machine. So perhaps a mini would make sense.

But, I love the integration and simplicity of the iMac. I do a lot of home video calls so the integrated cam is very useful.

Im also assuming the iMac will get the m1 by march next year so it will be between a mini and monitor vs iMac both running m1.

What would you pick? Ps does the mini have thermal throttling issues vs iMac ?

I had EXACTLY the same question.
I was looking for an Apple Silicon Mini, and then an external monitor, but realized a somewhat good external monitor would cost me at least $600 CAD during Black Friday.
But the combo would never look as good on my Desk as the iMac itself.

It's hard for me - but I'll wait.

Tough call and one that I’m pondering over as well. I’ve got an 5k 2014 iMac now, and had the same dilemma when I bought that. Mac mini seems to make sense, but I could never find a monitor that I was happy with compared to the iMac screen both in terms of quality and aesthetics. When the AS iMac arrives I’ll probably get one of those and sell on my old one. I look at the thing loads, and while it might sound silly, I want to enjoy looking at it. I vote iMac.

tough call indeed. Reassuring to hear others with the same dilemma and view point.

Considering my current iMac has lasted 8 years by the time I replace it, perhaps the integrated solution is the best.

Its just a shame I can’t use the retina iMacs in target display mode with my mbp. Another reason why a mini and monitor seemed good.

Feel like the updated iMac with m1 might be the way to go.
