A couple of years ago, I tried using an external SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure as a boot drive on my 2013 iMac and 2014 Mac Mini. I had the same problem on both systems. When they went to sleep for extended periods, usually overnight, I would try to log in the next morning only to find that the drive had disconnected and I was forced to reboot.
I eventually gave up and bought a special screwdriver and dissembled the 2014 Mini and installed the SSD which helped that system tremendously. However, I was not comfortable upgrading the internal drive in the iMac for fear of breaking the screen, and opted to leave it with the installed HDD. It is my main machine and is usable, but I would really like to speed it up and I believe that, with 24GB of RAM installed, the HDD is the bottleneck.
Is there any way to use the external boot SSD on the iMac and stop it from disconnecting every night while still letting the machine sleep? I asked this a few years ago, and I've tried Googling the answer, but I never seem to find anything other than change my power settings to prevent the machine from sleeping. I don't want to go that route, for a number of reasons, so I was hoping to try again for some other suggestions.
Thanks
