I'm replacing my 1 Terabyte HD with an SSD. Will I really need a thermal sensor? All I do is surf the web and let my grandson play some games on Pogo.com
You need the sensor to stop the fans from failing safe (due to lack of sensor data) and going to 100% speed. SMCfancontrol is a software utility for this (setting fan speed manually) and what I’ve used in the past (instead of the sensor) for this very upgrade.
I was told that was only really needed for the 27" iMac and that the 21.5 doesn't use as much power. Whatever they meant by that. I watched several YouTube videos and never did see anyone put that in their (late2013) 21.5" iMac.

The issue isn't that it will overheat, the issue is that without the sensor, the fans will default to full blast and stay there, no matter what the temperature of the system. It could be ice cold, and the fans will still be on.
There's several videos on YouTube and 3 of them told me it isn't needed for the 2013 21.5 only the 27". I'm not sure but all the videos I've watched nobody has mentioned a thermal sensor except for one and he stated that you only need to cut two wires but this was on the 2011.

Where are going to put that cable? there's not enough room to plug the adapter cable in and install the SSD
