2014 and Yosemite: Which is the better AdBlocker?

OK. We need to do another round of which is the faster and more effective adblocker:

I've been using a combination of GlimmerBlocker and AdBlocker Plus over the last years. Lately Glimmerblocker has been causing loading issues with Safari 8 in Yosemite and we all know how in-browser adblockers, proxy blockers and host-files can slow your loads down in certain situations (host files getting too long etc.).

So, in 2014, with Safari 8 under Yosemite: Which ad-blocker gives you the most coverage against ads, pop-overs and unders, YouTube pre-loads and others at the least cost. Ideally not loading ads should make web pages load FASTER, not slower.

What are your findings?

Also, this does not pertain to inferior browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

I’ve been using Safari AdBlock for years and it seems fine.

Firefox is an inferior browser? Call me when you have this on Safari:

- NoScript for privacy
- Adblock Plus that actually blocks all ads (any decent "anti-adblock" code running on websites stops Safari)
- Multiplatform browser that syncs your data (Chrome does this even better, but at least it's better than just syncing tabs)
- A huge library of other extensions
- Better developer tools
- Customization options (of basically anything)

The only things Safari has going for it is better energy efficiency and the fact that it has an iOS version (which I do use). On the desktop, however, Firefox is king. I was a previous Chrome user but now it has been turned into something terrible (memory hog, terrible energy efficiency, slow scrolling).

adguard works great; i was using adblock plus first, not sure, but safari SEEMS faster with adguard.

I’ve been using Safari AdBlock for years and it seems fine.

It does work very well albeit it doesn't block YouTube ads. The following addendums to the host file will solve that problem.

I used to be adamantly opposed to Safari browser. But the new upgrade in Yosemite is the quickest thing I've ever used.

Firefox seems bulky and sluggish to me. Chrome is decent and my second, but this new Safari is great. Adblock runs fine on it, get the extra pop up blocker.

- AdBlock Plus combined with GlimmerBlocker has always worked for me previously.
- Safari has synced before WebKit birthed Chrome. Multiplatform too until Safari for Windows died. Multiplatform is a non-issue for me obviously.
- It has all the extensions I need and I far prefer its developer tools to either Chrome or FF.
- Customization? It’s a browser, not a car full of stickers.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand: Which is the fastest, most efficient way of blocking ads?

GlimmerBlocker seems to stop Safari from working after loading the first website, if even. A hosts file is annoying to update manually, and slows down connections if it gets big enough. AdBlock Plus is hard on the cpu and noticeably slows down Safari now that it’s so incredibly much faster than FF or Chrome.

As a web developer it is literally my business calling other browsers inferior. I spend all day in one and have since the mid nineties.
