2014 i7 or wait for upgrade?

Thinking about buying a mac mini to run two monitors off of. I have an MBA but I'm not sure it will be powerful enough to run two 27" monitors, using some day trading sofware, light video/photo editing without getting too hot.

Anyways...having read the threads and news about the supposed update to the mac mini coming....I'm wondering if the upgrade will be worth waiting for.

My primary use for the mini would be for day trading and doing research. Some video and photo editing will also be done but this will be secondary and wont happen that often. Gaming is a possibility but not currently planning on getting in to it.

I'm assuming the current i7 would have enough oomph to both run my dual monitor set up but also handle my trading tasks/software and occasionally do some High-Def video/photo editing...but perhaps I'm wrong.

Your thoughts?

I completely agree. By dropping the mini for some imagined "inconvenience" or "lack of profit" they will be making a classic and tragic business mistake that really, with all the info out there, should not be made yet again.

It really cannot take all that many resources to keep a refreshed mini going forever. It is not like Apple cannot afford it. Maybe it is not their number one seller, but that is true of many items, as there can only be ONE number one seller.

But I like to think it is their BEST customers who like the mini. And by best I do not mean most $$$, although, as discussed in various posts, the "lead in" factor and enthusiast factor are critical in the mini buyers market. I mean good people and enthusiastic buyers when we buy.

And you know what Tim Cook? I am feeling disrespected. And that never bodes well. How about some sort of road map that is not so damn either all over the place or non-existant?

Do you not have the BALLS to tell us to our face you are discontinuing our favorite computer of all time? I thought not.

Give me a weekend and I'll be fully up and running on a nice NUC and Win 9 (hopefully soon) and look back on my Mac experience as a simple aberration. Maybe I'll give that Samsung S5 another look while I'm at it. At least they know a little bit about big screens.

Also waiting on the new Mac Mini if they ever release it. I'm getting tired of my iMac I have now. And I want to pair it with the LG 34" 4K monitor. Anyone have this set up with the current Mac Mini? And if so, how do you like it? I assume the Intel 4000 can handle it but Iris would be better option.

HD4000 only does 1080p. You will have to wait for the next one.

This model simultaneously supports 1920x1200 on an HDMI or a DVI display (using the included HDMI-to-DVI adapter) and 2560x1600 on a Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort display or even a VGA display (with an optional Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, which is compatible with the Thunderbolt port).
 
My local Apple Store once told me that they only sold one or two Mac minis
each month, compared to several hundred Macbooks(all variants) and iMacs.

Not sure if that's a local thing or not... but if it's like that at other retailers,
then I don't see why Apple will keep the Mac mini in their line-up for much
longer.

Don't get me wrong, I can wait to buy an updated Mac mini. Have been
waiting for a year or two... but the waiting is just getting too long. :(

who buys Mac mini and expects it to output 4K? :)

that's like sleeping with Heidi Klum and ask her to bench press 200 pounds at the same time.

I don't mind that Apple doesn't update the Mac mini.... perhaps they can lower the current model's pricing by 10 to 20 percent and make everybody happy. :D

You said something about an LG 34" 4K monitor, which I don't believe exists. If you're referring to the 34UM95, that's ~3K if you want to look at it in those terms.

3440 x 1440

Current Mac Mini should run it fine over TB...new ones (if it happens) shouldn't have any issues at all. Currently running my 34UM95 in full res @ 60Hz from my 2013 MBA. Works fine over Displayport or TB.

There is a reason for that, and it's not because of the Mini itself as a device/computer, it's because it was last updated in Oct 2012 which is ridiculous! The fact that they are still selling this model is a slap in the face to the few people who do buy it unknowingly.

The damn thing has never been updated to Haswell which is ~6 months from being replaced by Intel's next-gen architecture. You'd be stupid to buy one right now, for full "apple" retail anyways. :mad:

hey Geology, I'm also thinking of getting a mac mini for trading purposes. Who's your broker and what charting software do you use?
I ask since most are windows based, so that my dilemma in buying the mac mini since I would have to use parallels :(

One major reason for Apple's edge in user experience is the full control over all devices and their software under one helmet.

Such a split would make that deteriorate for sure (not to mention the vanishing synergies and flexibility of resource allocation inside the company).

I can understand the wish for an improvement, but imho a split would be a bad choice.
 
The mac mini is very popular in the school market. I doubt apple would drop it and risk losing that sector. I personally used to work at a school that had mostly minis with just a few iMacs of varying ages.

I see on the contrary a lot of schools by the iMac. At the base price it's a good performer, comes with a screen, basically the all-in-one it's made to be.

Buying a Mac mini requires a lot of hardware and there is always the possibility of theft.
