I've got 2 Macbook Pros mid-2014. One of them was my daily computer for 7 years until I got my new 14inch Pro. It still works reasonably well, but has some cosmetic and minor issues, like 1 busted speaker, USB ports whcih don't stay connected due to wear and tear, and it's got some scratches on the screen.

The other 2014 is one my mom bought which had a motherboard which died within a few months of buying it. For whatever reason, she never got it repaired and it's sat unused in the closet for years. It won't start up due to the fried motherboard, but the thing is in mint condition otherwise.

What I want to do is take out the motherboard from one of them and put it into the other. The shell is flawless and the battery is probably in great shape.

Does anyone know a great way to combine these 2 old machines and make 1 good one? I don't want to spend a whole lot on this project, but if there's a good guide on how an untrained person could do this, I'd appreciate it. I figure if I can make myself 1 perfect 2014 Macbook, it would make a good 2nd computer to keep around for a while more.

Thanks a lot

Sure, go for it. Although it will probably take >1 hour worth of time/patience, some small screw drivers, and paying close attention to a repair guide likely found on ifixit.com

So long as they're both the same size (like both 13" or both 15") then you shouldn't have a problem doing that. Just be patient, take it slow, and follow a good guide on iFixit. Make sure that you have all the right size screwdrivers and whatnot first; you don't want to get halfway through and realize you can't take a part out because of that.

If you need any help or pointers, do let me know, I'd be happy to help however I can!
