Hi everyone,

I have a MBPr that is approaching 3 years old. The A and D keys make plastic crackling noises when pressed. They even tend to hang up after being pressed (only briefly) and make a noise on the way back up. I assume the plastic mechanism under the key may be in need of a replacement. The keys work fine, and nothing was ever spilled on the keyboard - no liquids or food.

What should I do to fix this? It's still under the 3 year Apple warranty, but I hesitate taking this to a store for such a minor problem. I never got the best impression from the "techs" at Apple stores. Should I purchase some replacement hinges and do it myself? I see the whole key is $4.95 on some sites. Was hoping to find them cheaper. I've also never popped a macbook key off myself, but from Youtube it looks simple enough.

Any input is appreciated!

There might be some dirt in those keys. Try googling for how to clean the keys.

If the keys are indeed broken I would rather have Apple fix it than do it myself, but that's just me.

Perhaps dust and other random stuff over the years? Not sure.

Were you eating saltines in the vicinity?
LOL no nothing. Food and drinks stay away from my macbook. I'm more liberal with that stuff around my devices that have external keyboards and mice.

Update: Took the macbook to an Apple store. The guy claimed he fixed it. Seemed okay. Took it home... same issues.

So, I figured I would try to pop the keys out myself. I replaced the hinges with some keys I rarely use like [ and ] with the keys that were acting up. MAGIC! They are fixed. So glad the "genius bar" is so helpful.

Ordering some replacement, new keys from a reseller. If you want something done right, you always have to do it yourself. /sigh
