I just ordered a new 27" iMac, I went with the 8GB model since I could upgrade on my own. I haven't bought a computer in a while that I've been able to or wanted to upgrade myself - I bought a 16GB kit (8x2) - Can I leave the 8GB (4x2) in there and make 24GB or does it cause problems doing that?

Usually as long as the RAM is the same speed, 1866 and 1866, you'll be good.

RAM will change to match the slowest speed installed, example if you bought 1600MHz RAM and installed along side the 1866MHz stock RAM then all of your RAM would operate at 1600MHz.
So even then it will still work just at a reduced speed.
