Hi guys

I’m thinking about getting a second hand 2015 27in iMac and upgrading it a bit with an ssd and some more ram.

Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on this machine. A 27in 5k screen seems very good value, almost too good to be true.

I have an MBP mid 2012 and that is still working very well, so I’m thinking this iMac should be ok…? Any known issues with these iMacs?

I have that model. There are some image retention issues, but otherwise OK. I sometimes get it on a hot day or if doing a demanding task. Hard edges of what was there previously stays around for a few seconds, occasionally longer (an edge of a window that had been open for a long time for example), and is more prominent around the edges of the screen.

Thanks

So is the quality of the screen/5k actually good?

2015 27" iMacs are notorious for developing pink edges on the screen (a pinkish hue near the perimeter). Suggest check for this and see if it bothers you.
The other (cosmetic) issue is image persistence (not burn-in) at the edges. Best test is to bring up Launchpad and see if a ghost of the menu bar persists. See if this bothers you.
Some people don't realize they have these screen issues until it is pointed out, then cannot unsee them.

Awesome.

Did you upgrade any of the inside by any chance? Ram, ssd..?
I added 16GB of RAM for a total of 24GB, which was very easy to do. I got it second-hand (a swap for my 15" MBP that ended up desk bound), so I was stuck with the Fusion drive, but as it was the early 3GB version, the SSD part is 128GB, and seems to do the work 99% of the time, so slowdowns are rare. And I am pushing the machine. I am doing game development, so I often have a second 4K screen adding screen space, and sometimes have game engine, code editors, graphics and audio software and more open.

I sometime boot from an external USB3 SSD for a different version of macOS (Illustrator CS4 won't run anything newer than Mojave), and that works well.

Thanks guys

I’ve been doing some research and even the 2017 27in is pretty good price and upgradeable.
