Hi all, hopefully someone can help shed a little light on this one 😬

I turn my MBP on and within seconds it’s showing me the brightness icon, it shows it dimming down, then the laptop shuts down or at least goes into some power saving mode ? It’s on but the screen is off.

I keep going around in circles turning it on, it runs through the sand cycle again.

Has anyone seen this before or knows what it is ?

I’m thinking it’s got something to do with the battery ? I’ve run a diagnostic test but it’s not registered anything ?

Thanks very much in advance

Have you tried "Coconut Battery" (free utility) on it?
If so, how much of the battery "is left"?

Have you been getting any "service battery" alerts?

Do you live anywhere near a brick n mortar Apple Store?
(not a "3rd-party provider" -- a REAL "Apple Store")

If the battery capacity gets below 80%, they may offer you the $199 battery replacement deal. You get...
- a new, Apple-labeled battery
- installation
- a short warranty.

All in all, a pretty good deal.

Thanks so much for your speedy reply.

I’m not sure it will stay on long enough to test it through

I’m not sure it will stay on long enough to test it through coconut battery.

I would have taken it to an Apple Store in the UK but unfortunately Apple takes the piss with prices over here. Even the resellers battery replacements aren’t worth it.

There are many reasons that cause mac system shutting down, few of the main reasons are:
  • Depleted battery
  • Outdated version of macOS
  • Disk and software errors
  • Peripherals causing malfunction
  • Kernel errors caused by third-party apps
To fix the MacBook random shutting down issue, you can try the below fixes:

1. Shut down your mac properly
2. Run Disk Utility
3. Check the battery health
4. Check for malware
5. Update macOS

Hope it helps!

You're either going to have to:
- replace the battery
or
- use it plugged into the charger all the time
or
- put it into the closet.

Your choice.

Apple has (in the USA) a $199 battery replacement program.
For that you get
- a new Apple-labeled battery
- installation
- a short warranty.

All in all, a pretty good deal.

I would imagine they offer something similar in the UK, although it might cost a little more.
You won't know unless you make an appt and take it in for a check.
