After leaving it on the bedroom floor all night (not sure what this has to do with the problem), my 2015 MB Pro running Mojave has purple horizontal lines that wash over the screen, making it impossible to work with. Do you know what this likely is? Thank you for any thoughts.

Could be a malfunctioning/not properly connected cable in your machine. I had a similar problem and I fixed that by patting it like on a TV remote (not suggesting you try the same).

A photo of the issue might help with answers.

The "official" first steps would be resetting NVRAM and resetting SMC. A reinstall (over your current installation which doesn't affect your accounts/apps etc) of macOS would probably be next.

But it probably is either a cable issue, GPU issue, or display issue. I'm not sure how the guts are configured on those models but a swollen battery can push on other components (cable) in some models.

See if this makes sense to you guys. i have a growing suspicion that it's moisture, that affects a connection. The bottom part of the computer has pulled away, leaving an open gap. What's more, I first noticed this after leaving it on the floor of my room. Later, when I did that again overnight, it did the purple washing lines again! That floor has always been prone to moisture; the wood panels warp.

Yesterday at my girlfriend's, it was crazy raining, very wet day in Connecticut. I started to realize, maybe the issue all along was moisture, or swelling of some kind, and that's disconnecting some kind of display cable?
