Just this week, my 2015 MBP has starting to randomly completely power off. No warning, no nothing, just completely powers off. My power / battery can be anywhere from 10 - 50% and just like that, the MBP turns off.

When I try to reboot, I get the screen that tells me to connect to power source.

My MBP is a 2015, I did the battery recall back in 2019??.

Any suggestions on what to check or do? Do I need a new battery?

My 2017 13 inch does the same thing, except it hibernates. I am sure it is because of battery, because it gives me "Service needed" warning and never shuts down like that when plugged in.

What OS are you using? My friend has a 2015 MBP and this same issue on Monterey. He was able to fix it by making the Thunderbolt Bridge (in Network Settings) inactive. Not sure why that worked, but it did. Other than that, I'd try a PRAM/SMC reset and If all fails, a clean install of the OS

Same, Monterey.

I guess I can try the Thunderbolt trick as well?

Yeah I tried the PRAM/SMC reset and that didn't work. I didn't know if there another reset or trick I didn't know about??Keep getting the "service recommended" message under the battery icon.

If this keeps up, I'll just take in the laptop then and get a new battery.

Have you checked the battery health?

Yeah I'd wager thats the culprit since it's working fine on power.

just an update - stopped by Apple Store yesterday. needed a new batter. MBP being shipped off for repairs, hope it comes back next week, they said 3-5 days, all for $250. boo

The Apple battery replacement used to be $199, actually a fairly good deal.

It costs $50 more now due to inflation, but it has some good points. You get:
1. An APPLE-LABELED OEM replacement battery (3rd party batteries are a crapshoot)
2. Installation (better than making a mistake by "doing it yourself")
3. A short warranty.

Same problem with my 2015 MBP. I've had the battery serviced once or twice already. Current battery is on 564 cycles and holds 78.5% of its design capacity according to coconutBattery.
