Purchased a 2016 MBP back in November 2016. I have not experienced any of the more well known issues such as the keyboard or backlight issues however I am convinced they are inevitable. Most likely the reason why I have yet to have any issues is that I consider myself a light user, in the way that when I do use the laptop it is mostly connected to an external display and have a Magic keyboard and Magic Mouse.

Both programs are set to expire four years from date of purchase in roughly seven months and I feel I may have no choice but to upgrade just for peace of mind. Is anyone else on a similar path and feels the same way?

I am considering updating this machine:

To a 2020 Macbook Pro, for a similar reason. I should be able to sell the above machine for about $1000, so for about $1000 I could upgrade to a similar or better machine. I also do not know what generation that processor 6th or 7th? Just not sure.

If you have all your stuff and work backed up then there is no risk. what do you mean 'Both programs are set to expire four years from date of purchase' ?

Not looking to spend a few hundred dollars to repair a 4+ year old computer.

If performance is not an issue, I would wait. My 2018 has the same specs as the base 16" but I have had my keyboard replaced twice. I would upgrade once the program expires or have another issue.

is it possible to get the screen ribbon and the keyboard replaced before any issues occur?

Resale will be super low when it expires, so it might make sense to upgrade now.
