2017 13” MBP w/Touchbar, i5

I inherited my daughters older MBP, she kept saying it just wouldn’t do anything. I charged it up, updated to Ventura, and it was working fine for me And my needs. Hello heat compared to our M1 machine, but i have a lapdesk.

So it was fully charged and I went to bed charging my ipad, so it was unplugged overnight. It wouldn’t turn on in the morning, i tried all sorts of key press chants i found online, nothing, left it plugged in and it magically started working around 2pm (probably 4 hours on the charger). It was then working fine all day, i just left it plugged in.

Last night I left it plugged in, and this morning it won’t turn on again.

So apparently it isn’t a morning computer???

I currently don’t have cash to throw at it - if i did it would be to fix the screen on the M1 that the cats broke. But what can I look at to get it working? It doesn’t look damaged, although I feel like throwing it myself right now. My ipad isn’t cutting it right now, i still haven‘t adjusted to the 11” screen, and my laser software won’t run on it.

Any direction to look? Keypress chants i haven’t tried? Offerings to the obsolete Apple God???

Thanks!

Funny thing but it's possible that power button is broken, but there's a schedule enabled, so Mac will start and turn off on schedule, but not on demand))

If it will come back as it was previously -- definitely check the System Preferences/Settings --> Power --> Schedule

Well, it booted this morning, tested on a whim - because NOTHING yesterday.

When it boots, it does to a gray screen with white pips at the bottom. I then have to use my password instead of touchid, and then it goes back into my account. Weird.

Now, will it work in an hour when I get back home?!?! lol

That sounds like the battery is dying while it's sleeping and it's booting off the memory hibernation image.

My suspicion is that you need a new battery.

Would it do that even plugged in??

But a battery is cheaper than a new computer - well, it was the last time I looked.

It most likely is a valid conclusion, is the hibernation image what that gray screen would be??

With the dots at the bottom, yes. That makes me think it's losing power and restoring from a RAM image.
