I came across some forum posts a while back stating that the new iMacs use the same ssd as the 2015/16 MacBook pro's. Does anybody know if there's any truth to this? If I can get my hands on one, I'd love to swap it out. I don't mind going the standard 2.5in ssd route, but the pci-e drives are just so much faster!

Check this site: http://www.microsatacables.com/ngff-m2-pcie-ssd-card-as-2013-2014-2015-macbook-ssd-m2-1022-mac

I got that link off of this thread: macrumors late 2013 15 retina m.2 pcie ssd to retina adapter

Note that it does not support NVME SSD, it has to be ACHI type, which my initial research says this type maxes out at 500 GB.

Call them and see if they might be working on an adapter for an SSD type with wider support and specifically made for the iMac.

There is also: http://www.sintech.cn/SATA adapter/HDD-SSD adapter guider.htm

I have not used tried any of these myself, but they look interesting.
