I just stumbled across this deal from my local carrier, I don’t even know if they will have any in stock since I can’t call till the morning. But they just put the 5th gen iPad LTE model on sale for $159 brand new, this would be a big upgrade for our kids using cheaper android tablets right now.

Would these iPads still be good for a few years atleast?

Is that $159 free and clear or $159 with 2-year contract? Great deal at $159 with no service requirement. Not so much if you need to pay a device/line fee per month.

We've got an iPad 5th gen at home and same with the Air 2, I expect at least 2 more years out of it.

sounds like a great deal at that price and a nice step up for your kids!

my guess is they are unloading older models because of the new models - tomorrow's apple event may have even more info along this avenue

No contract but you do have to add it to your share plan for $10 a month but I know there are ways to call and cancel it after since there is no contract commitment to it. But they do give an extra gig of data for keeping it.

I just wanna be sure before dropping over $500 after taxes for 3 of them that they still have some decent life left in them. My kids love their current tablets but they are still power limited to what you can do on them. Minecraft is where they about max out for games

Three of my grandkids are still using these (two of them have 2018s) - bought new last spring when the 2018s came out because I got a great deal on them. They’re having no issues with them at all.

I don't really game on an iPad so I can't comment on that but the 2017 iPad uses the A9 processor. The A7's are expected to be dropped by Apple in September when the new iOS comes out. That the A8 has only just stopped being sold by Apple (in the Mini 4) may mean that A8 and A9 iPad support continues for longer than we might otherwise expect, but we can't guarantee.

Expect the iPad to start running into trouble app availability wise a couple of years after Apple drop support for it. I'm really only starting to see this now with my iPad 3 using A5X, support dropped in 2016. I expect mass problems after the next iOS release.

The 2017 and 2018 iPads both have 2GB RAM.

A9 devices run great on iOS 12 (as does the A8x Air 2). But we can’t know how iOS 13 or 14 will work on those older processors. At that price, I would take the risk, but I would not update the OS without checking out performance reviews first

That's the ipad I'm using now, other than not having pencil support its still a good ipad, scored a couple chicken dinners pubg mobile last night, so still has plenty of horsepower.
