New to the forum here but long time lurker. I recently purchased a 2017 ipad Pro 10.5" with 256gb for a "couldn't resist" price (less than $500 CDN!) from Staples. It was an open box item but has a full 2-year Staples warranty, with Accident protection etc (better than AppleCare). I will be using it mainly for light photo editing, media, browsing, and some Office applications; nothing too taxing. I have not set it up yet, and I'm wondering if it would be best to update it immediately to the latest ipad os (I do want to use it with an external hdd with the powered usb adapter), or should I set it up first as is, and install all of my existing apps (we have other ipads/iphones)? I'm just wondering if it would be beneficial to do a so-called "clean install" of the ipad os before I install all of my apps etc.

Second question: that brings the amount of Apple devices in the home to 8 now. Four of the devices are for our kids (ipads and a 2012 Macbook Pro), and 4 between my wife and I (2 phones, 1 Macbook Air and my new ipad Pro). We have one itunes account with all of our purchases on it (music, movies, apps, etc.)
My question(s): is it wise to consider creating another account, i.e. one for kids's apps and media, and the current one for my wife and I? If so would all apps and media previously purchased be transferable or shareable to a new account? If only one account is all that is really necessary for all types of purchases, is Family Sharing the better way to go?
Anyone else with multiple devices and users able to share their wisdom? TIA.

Creating separate accounts for different users is always a good idea. You can add that as part of your family group and share everything But also have the flexibility to use the accounts individually. Unless you’re restoring from an old backup it doesn’t really matter when you update the OS.

I'm jealous. I tried finding that CAD$499 256 GB iPad Pro but couldn't find it anywhere.

External USB support is a major PITA though. The requirement for external power is really, really inconvenient.

Just restore from your existing iPad (if you have one) to the new iPad and then update from there.

How old are your kids? Family Sharing is great, but it's meant for non-teenage kids.

My kids are still 12 and under, so maybe I could make one account under the youngest's name...
