Recently my computer started jumping from full or mostly charged battery all the way to 0% in a matter of seconds. The screen will go black and it will show a simple graphic with a battery and power cord to indicate that it needs to be plugged in. It's happened a handful of times over the past couple months and I use my computer constantly. Anyone know what the problem is? Will getting the battery replaced by Apple fix this problem?

Some more info:
-The battery cycle count is 774. It says the battery health is normal.
-The issue seems to occur when the computer has to work a little harder than normal. Nothing crazy at all--just tasks that are a little more processor intensive.
-The issue never occurs with the computer plugged in.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Here try this out
and tell us what it said. I have a 2017 MBP, too. But with a fairly new battery. You wouldn’t only need to get the battery replaced, but the entire top case, including the keyboard and trackpad, unfortunately.

Thank you! I will try this tomorrow. Why would I would need all that additional stuff replaced? Is there a certain problem you think is causing the issue I'm seeing?

Because that’s how these Macs are manufactured. These 3 components are all glued together so tightly, they can’t simply be separated from each other. If one fails, all need to be replaced. Stupid, right?

Symptoms are consistent with a battery that needs replacement.

Battery internal resistance is high and when power draw peaks, the cells can’t provide enough current causing a shutdown.

That makes sense. It reminds me of the iPhone 6 era (or around there) when the phones would randomly drain battery quickly and/or shut down.

I ran the diagnostics and got ADP000, no issues found. Which is quite strange--I have this battery issue and my camera doesn't work at all. The camera broke a few months ago. I tried everything to fix it without any luck, and Apple told me the whole screen would need to be replaced.

Well sht.
Can you afford to buy a “new” MacBook Pro (2018 or later)?
Because if the screen and the topcase need to be replaced, that’d be too expensive for me to invest in this generation. You might get good deals on 2018, 2019 and 2020 (16inch) MacBook Pro‘s. Those seem to have fewer issues but more features and better performance.

Yes, thankfully I can afford a new computer. Don’t really want to spend the money, but Apple will give me $400-500 for this one and I’d rather do that then sell it to somebody knowing it has problems. I’d be pretty excited to get a new 14” pro but I’m just dragging my feet a bit right now.
