I have a MBP 2017 that works well except it recently started showing a black screen after 1.5-2 hours. If I sleep it I get it back in a minute but after a few minutes screen will go black again. Everything else works. If I am om Teams the sound is there, keyboard works but screen is black.
I have tried SMC and NVRAM reset with no result and it happens even in recovery mode.
My battery is starting to fail and even failed a diagnostic test so it needs to be replaced. The guy at the Apple store said if I keep it on charger than battery status shouldn’t matter. I am not sure if this is correct or not. A new battery will cost $200 and if it still doesn’t help than I am looking at 600 for a repair and trade in value is 230. No plan to repair but question is if the battery could be behind this and replacing it would help? I tried setting the graphics to only use the intel built in as well as telling it to use only the discrete graphic card. Same result.
I have considered a complete reinstall of Monterey but when it happens in recovery mode it doesn’t seem worthwhile as I believe it is hardware related.

Any advice? Does it make sense to replace the battery or just trade it in?
Anyone having faced a similar situation ?

You could be experiencing “flex-gate”. You may want to search his forum on that term to see if the problems described in that thread match your display cutout experience.

I have been having a similar issue since some time ago

After some time on, I start seeing glitches in the screen. If I close the lid and open again, it works normal for a bit longer, until one time where the screen turns off and I need to let it cool down. It happens faster when in battery, but definitely also when charging. I still don't know if it is worth it to replace the battery or just give it to apple and buy a new one, since the new apple chips are so good...

Ah those infamous 2016/2017 macbook pro's. Nothing but a bag of hurt, especially the longer you try to keep them.

This is exactly how mine is behaving as well. Question is can it be the battery causing it? I will not do any other repair due to the cost.
But is it even worth to try $198 for a new battery if this behavior doesn't stop? It did start right after 12.6 and after i checked on the battery since the health started fluctuation quite a bit and last time in Apple store when we ran diagnostics it showed bad.

If battery is not causing it (I remember reading that battery going bad can impact the display) is it the screen or the motherboard?
Is there any way to test?

If there’s a way to test please let me know because I’m in the same situation.
I think it should be the battery, as ok cold the screen works fine.
I installed some stats software to try to find any correlation with temperatures or with igpu or dgpu, I only noticed that if it starts happening while you’re on igpu, you can manually switch to dgpu and the computer will work normal for some more time, but at the end it happens again.

My MacBook Pro 2015 15” is powerful enough for normal tasks and capture one. Lightroom is a bit slow and dxo photolab very slow, and I could use more power for eventual use of davinci resolve and 4K files, that’s why I’m considering upgrading.
But I love the thin form factor and the Touch Bar. The new Apple silicon have more ports but I still need my Cfexpress B adapter, and there are still not full usb-a ports so I still need adapters…

I am considering replacing the battery since it is 16 inch w 16g RAM and works really well. To replace it would be a lot.
