I am retired, volunteering, and working with donating Apple devices to charities.

I was gifted a 2017 iMac, purchased new in 2019, which has a flawed screen. The damage was due to carelessness on the part of the owner & repairs would cost about $600.
Taking the less expensive route, I am investigating how much a 21” external monitor and adapter would cost (& which monitor and adapter are best) before passing this along to a charity for their disposition.

As I research this I found a thread on the Apple Support site about this and their discussion of which adapter and which monitor to purchase in order to get the best resolution. I found it all terribly confusing.

From Apple: The 13.3 " retina display of this MB Pro is capable of "2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch with support for millions of colors"; supported scaled resolutions are 1680x1050; 1440x900 and 1024x640.

Charging and expansion:
Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports with support for:
• Charging
• DisplayPort
• /Thunderbolt (up to 40Gb/s)
• USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s)

While on the one hand we don't want to spend the $600 for repairs, we don't want to cheap out on the monitor and adapter as we suspect that a good quality monitor and adapter will probably be less that half the price of the $600 repair.
We would be very grateful for any recommendations for 21" monitors and adapters that would allow us to pass this MBP on w/o spending $600 on repairs.

Firstly, you talk about 2 different computers. At the begining you say you were gifted a 2017 iMac and then you describe a 13.3" retina MB Pro. Which is it?

Anyhow you will need this, or something similar:

And this QHD (2560x1440 resolution) monitor will work just fine:

The loss of 160 pixels on the height resolution of the monitor the computer will adjust for and will not be a problem.

My bad on the mixup. It is indeed a 2017 MBP purchased in 2019.
If I may continue to try your patience, the DisplayPort cable terminates in a female end...so won't we need another cable to connect it to the female port on the back of the Lenovo?

Yes, my mistake, that is the male end, too long of a day I guess. That cord will plug into the back of your monitor (if it has a displayport input).
