Has anyone ever had an issue with the MacBook Pro chassis actually splitting open? For some reason it seems that both sides of my MacBook Pro have a split open from the sides and the bottom plate.

See if there's an extended, swollen battery related, warranty for your specific model. Apple replaced the bottom case, battery and, maybe (forget) keyboard on my 2015 MBP well after AppleCare coverage had expired. These are “quiet” programs. I found out about mine by visiting an Applestore and complaining that my MBP was rocking around on a flat surface.

As others have mentioned, you probably have a battery that's swelling up.

This is VERY DANGEROUS.
It can cause a fire or an actual explosion.

Do you have a brick n mortar Apple Store anywhere near?
(NOT a "3rd party provider", but a REAL "Apple Store")

Take it to them as soon as you can.

They may offer a free replacement.

If not, they can probably offer you the $199 battery replacement.
You get:
- a new, Apple-labeled battery
- installation
- a short warranty on the work.

But DON'T WAIT on doing this -- go as soon as you can.

One other thing:
Are you one of those "I leave it plugged into the charger all the time" guys...?
