So I’m looking at Specs of the 2018 iPad Pro vs the M2 2022 iPad Pro

  • Built-in 29.37-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. That’s the 2018 iPad Pro
  • Built-in 28.65-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. This is the new M2 iPad Pro for 2022
what gives ?

Could be lots of things; availability, costs, chipset power requirements, etc.

It’s obvious Apple has no intention to give iPads more battery life as every gen seemingly has the same battery life since their existence ha.

A few things that could influence it:

Bigger logic board, bigger camera system + LiDAR, additional depth to the display system minimising possible battery depth without making chassis bigger.

I can't say exactly what the cause is but there's some options

It’s the same size as the M1 model, so the change happened last year. The 2018/2020 had the same batteries too - likely because a new battery for a tiny refresh wasn’t worth the extra cost of stocking parts.

That's within margin of variance so nothing to sweat over. Mine has a design capacity of 28.94 Wh but slightly higher actual charge capacity of 29.28 Wh.

The 2018 has always had the biggest battery compared to its successory and I have also seen tests (I think from a German guy, but I can't remember) showing it had slightly better battery life too. But honestly it's not a big difference...

The A12X is on 7nm while the M1 and M2 are on 5nm. Therefor the 2018 iPad Pro needs a larger battery as it has a less efficient chip.

No. This would be true only if they were clocked similarly but the M1 is clocked much higher, that's also why it's much more powerful, efficiency allows it to be clocked higher and still have similar (but not better) battery life, so no the larger battery is not there to make up for the efficiency difference (A12Z had a smaller battery while having essentially the same chip)
