2018 MacBook Pro or 2017 4K iMac?

As above. Assuming you're a student attending classes, then it would seem that you need mobility. You can always buy a nice large screen monitor to use with the MacBook Pro at home or when you're not in class.
2,000 will get you a nicely equipped iMac, either 21" or 27" but you'll not be able to take that computer to class.
The 15" MBP is out of reach as the staring price is 2,200 and I would assume for a graphic student you would want a dGPU and a larger screen
The 13" MBP is probably your best bet given the pricing.
The question boils down do you have mobility needs? If you need to take your computer to class then the MBP is the obvious choice.

Yea. Realistically the MBP is probably the appropriate choice anyway. What if you go home but need to work on something? Get together with classmates for a project, etc.
True, I would go with a refurb as well - also don’t forget to look at education pricing!
If the 15" is of interest I'd certainly check to see if education pricing fits your budget.
