iPad Pro 2018 Pros and LG UltraFine 4K/5K

Hello all,

I’m a bit confused about the intricacies of the different USB-C standards. It seems to me that the connections on the UltraFine 5K are Thunderbolt 3, while the UF 4K uses regular ‘ol USB-C.

This AppleInsider article (https://iphone.appleinsider.com/art...-connectivity-to-an-external-4k-or-5k-display) says that since the ports on the new Pros aren’t TB3, it will not drive the UF 5K displays at 5K. Will it still drive this display at 4K, or will it be limited to just mirroring the iPad’s resolution? Also, more importantly for me, will the iPads support 4K resolution on the UF 4K’s USB 3.1 gen 1 ports, or does any monitor need USB 3.1 gen 2 for both 4K and 5K resolutions?

I understand these answers might not be known for certain yet but any educated guesses are greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I think they just mirror. Some apps take advantage and extend 4k content like iMovie I believe, but that's about it.

They mirror the general UI but I believe they support 4K and 5K video playback, if the monitor supports it. It’s discussed in that AI article I linked to in OP.

I just tried to connect my 12” MacBook to my LG 5k display. It charges, but that’s it. I shows nothing on the monitor. I expect it will be the same with the iPad Pro.

I think the iPads won’t connect at all to the 4K/5K LG displays but they will just fine to any other 4K monitor/TV with a DisplayPort to usbC connection. In those displays, the iPad will mostly mirror the image but when photos or videos are displayed, they’ll be able to utilize the full resolution of the monitors. It is a clunky set up but at least you’ll be able to play movies stored in the device just fine.

This site says that the 4K has DisplayPort:

What’s confusing is that as noted in another thread, onstage it was stated that displays up to “5k” were supported. Watch here at 55:30.

It could still make sense that it can output to 5K as long as the monitors support USB 3.1 gen 2, since the UF 5K doesn’t support that standard (TB3 in and gen 1 out, I think).

This is clearly a 4K UltraFine. It's Apple's official monitor so why wouldn't it work with it?

It will definitely work with UF 4K. Probably won’t work with UF 5K due to the fact that the iPad Pros ports don’t support Thunderbolt 3, which is the only standard that the input of the UF 5Ks support.
