2019, 27', iMac, IPS glow

Hi!

Just delivered my iMac (how it's beaftiful! ) and tested it on IPS glow. What I've got on the picture. Does this a normal behaviour and all IPS monitors got this effect of I should try to send back and ask for a new one (in my case, it will be around 2-3 weeks)? I appreciate, if you can share your photos in dark room with black image.. Especially who got this models.

And the second question: doest this effect will grow through the time? If yes, does Apple care help me to fix it after 1-2 year?

Backlight bleed does vary from unit to unit, but there's a chance you'll get one that's better, or one that's worse. None of them are perfect.

My advice is simply to relax and enjoy your new iMac.

From your point of view keeping it seems good.
From the point of waiting people for a refurb sending it back is the way to go.

So, I not decided yet what to do.. Apple support told me, that this is a bad situation, when iMac gives such red glow and they don't face often with this problem, so it means that best way will be send this iMac back and wait for new one. But I don't know what I'll receive in future

This is normal. I’d only get annoyed if I crank up the brightness in very dimmed environment. Which I never go past 150cd/m2 anyway.

Which model you use?
Some people tell me that they never face such glows in 5k models.

I have the 2017 27" model and I don't get IPS glow at all (and looks like both 2017 and 2019 use the same panel). If returning the unit and getting a new one doesn't involve a lot of hassle I'd return it.

Thanks for feedback! Can you take a photo in dark room with solid black in monitor?
And tell me, pls, in different angles (top and bottom), you still don't see any glows in corners?
For me, it's visible only in dark room + solid black in full monitor.

Doesn’t bother me when look directly, it’s not as “exaggerated”. Side angle is as bad as expected.

When I took these photos (max iMac brightness, screen is calibrated with probe already), I adjusted the exposure to match what my eyes see. If one just point to the iMac screen, it will just brighten the exposure and makes the glow looks exaggerated. For example, unadjusted:

Display Uniformity (roughly 120cd/m2)

p.s: I would only be bothered if we are paying Eizo price, fortunately we aren’t for this gorgeous consumer 5K panel. Wait until we see if the XDR display suffers bleeding.

Wow. Really nice results. I don't see any glows at the corners in the front photo.

Btw, how you did this "Display Uniformity"? It's kind a software that can help to check size of the glow? If yes, tell me pls here I can get it

You need a physical instrument, mine is retail X-Rite i1Display Pro, which comes with bundled X-Rite i1Profiler software.

If you get OEM i1Display probe, free DisplayCal does the job nicely too.

So, if I will call to the specialist, he can take this test and tell me: problem with monitor, not with my eyes? If so, I think that this is only one objective method to check this out.

not worth the hassle, if you're keen just exchange it then, no cost. I've tested the iMac Pro panel in store for QC quality, same glow variance, not better.

Called to Apple and specialist from Ireland, told me that this is not normal.
Guys, who fix apple's products, told me too — this is not ok when you've got such big «colored glow».
So I packed iMac and will send it back.

It is normal. Just check out any other IPS screen, like a phone or another computer, with a complete black wallpaper. You'll see the same.

Small update. I've sent back this iMac, and when received money, bought one more. This iMac don't have this violet glow. So glad Thanks to all for your messages.

I'm glad you got a better screen that you're happy with. Apple and IPS LCDs is always a hit or miss when it comes to display uniformity. That being said, the new set of photos you took are completely different than the initial ones you shared. They are really dim, so obviously will look better.
