I’m a little confused regarding this subject and Coffee Lake processors in iMacs in general : do 2019 iMacs have Coffee Lake HEVC/H.265 Hardware Acceleration on MacOS Mojave ?

I read that this capability lies in integrated UHD Graphics 630 in Coffee Lake CPUs. And as far as I know iMacs don’t use integrated graphics, only discrete graphics card. In the past Mac OS X wasn’t able to handle HEVC Hardware acceleration on Radeon Graphics or other discrete cards.

Am I missing something ? Do Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake Macbook pro’s get an advantage over iMacs regarding HEVC hardware acceleration on Mac OS X thanks to their UHD integrated graphics ?

The video decoding and encoding hardware core is part of the Intel CPU's (not GPU's!) since Sandy Bridge (2011) and is called "Quick Sync Video". Since Skylake it supports HEVC/H.265 and since Kaby Lake/ Coffee Lake it supports 10-bit HEVC.

So don't worry, your 2019 iMac has all the possibilities regarding HEVC and it will blow every MacBook out of the water performance wise....

I just think, after watching Max Yuryev's performance graphs, that Apple has not implemented the 10-bit HEVC hardware support into FCPX yet. Lets see if upcoming versions will bring a change to this.
