I've noticed a peculiar issue where the app icon preview of video files often shows a sort of blue static-like image rather than a still from the file and less frequently when the video file is previewed (with space bar in finder) or opened in quicktime it shows that blue static instead of the video. At first I thought it was corrupted files but then I realised going back to them they worked fine. Because I thought it was corrupted files I unfortunately haven't taken images of the problem but I was wondering whether anyone else has noticed the same thing?

This is a 12 core with the 580X

I'll check on this tonight.

Update: I checked some .mov icons on the 7.1 desktop and I don't see any color issues or lines with the icons.

Believe it is a Catalina METAL bug and have seen similar on iMac in client’s office (575X or 580X model). Suggest you file a bug report with Apple and see if they address or respond.

It has to be a bug. I have seen similar graphic glitches in FCP x since the last 2 days we have been working on a project. It’s random. FCP X is not optimized for the Mac Pro as well. It brings down the system after a few hours of edits. I guess 10.15.5 should bring some much needed metal fixes

It’s a Catalina Metal thing. Also had similar problems on and iMac Pro. Thankfully I haven’t seen it on the Mac Pro so fingers crossed it stays that way. Metal performance in FCP has been great for me on the Mac Pro. The real pain point is the Catalina network driver that makes using FCP with a NAS unusable. A fix is apparently in the works but who knows when that will be.

Thanks everyone, I'm very glad to hear it's a software thing. I haven't noticed it for a week or so, since updating to 10.15.3 I think, although that was when I was doing some work in Motion so I'll keep an eye out for a recurrence next time I'm using it or FCP.

Is this the line on the icon you are talking about?

No, it's only blue 'static' or glitchiness for the whole rectangle. Say you have a folder of 300 video files and you're scrolling through previewing them it'll occur on random batches of them, i.e. files 54-78 and 114-122 will show a blue icon but the rest will be normal. When opened the blue static doesn't move around like static or a corrupted video file with some intact data, it's just that one blue static still. But not all the files with blue icons show that when opened usually they still work fine, and they'll work fine if you close the file and finder window and go back to it.

I understand now. I've not had issues like that. Best wishes ~

I get a fully red window (where the image is supposed to be) for about a second. 580x. 10.15.3. Often happens after running after effects, etc. Seems to glitch the driver.

I've seen that as well. Sometimes just for a second (i.e. a webpage loads in Safari and it's as though the background colour is set to red) but other times an app doesn't recover from it and has to be force quit :/

The red dots and red screen are a Catalina issue, not isolated to MP7,1. Have reported on personal MBP16,1 and have seen on updated iMacs too. I’m fairly certain it’s an AMD driver issue related to METAL.
