Until a few weeks ago, the MB Pro was almost always on a desk with an external monitor and power cord attached. More recently, I have used it on battery power. I'm surprised at how quickly the battery charge seems to get low when I'm usually just checking email and on the internet (very little video playing). Battery System Preference shows condition as Normal.

Somewhere I read to check the Energy tab in Activity Monitor. Currently it reads as follows:

Remaining charge: 38%
Time remaining: 2:03
Time on battery: 9:07

What is the meaning of the last item, Time on battery? I think somewhere I read that it's the time since the laptop was last on external power. I assume, given the 9 hour number, that includes time the laptop isn't even being used.

Edited: One more observation. A couple of times recently when I did a video conference (Zoom meeting which I do in browser) if I start out with a well-charged battery, say 85% or higher, it usually goes down to about 5% at the end of an hour. Is that to be expected?

There are multiple reasons that cause the Mac battery to drain fast issue. However, to fix the problem, you can try the below fixes:

1. Restart your Mac
2. Install the latest macOS updates
3. Check battery usage in System Preferences
4. Reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC
5. Turn off Power Nap

Hope this will help you resolve the issue!

Thanks. I've done all 5 except for #4. Only SMC seems it might be relevant. Will have to read up more to feel comfortable about it.
