Let me explain the issue - Apple's diagnosis and tell me what you think.

2 weeks ago I opened the display on my MBP and the screen was completely filled with digital artifacts. it had to be hard-powered off then back on and worked fine.

Throughout that week that happened occasionally, every day or two.

This week the screen started just going completely black when opening the display - but the display backlight was on (and the keyboard lighting etc)

I then realized that I can use the laptop, if I only open the display halfway. Then it's fine. If you open it any further than halfway the screen goes black. If you lower it a bit, the screen will come back on working ok.

the angle of the laptop doesn't matter. Whether it's sitting flat, slanted in a stand, upside down - this is how it behaves.

I took it to Apple who said it is either:

1. Cost $0 = Reseat display ribbon cable

2. Cost $120 = Replace display ribbon cable

3. Cost $850 = Replace entire display

She said this laptop is not affected by any flex cable issues that would result in a free repair/replacement cable.

I left it with them.

I received a call a two hours later saying they tried a replacement cable but the issue remains the same - therefor I would have to have the entire display replaced.

Just looking for opinions on if people think the entire display would need replacing with the issues the MBP is exhibiting. Essentially - do you believe Apple?

For the record I will not be replacing the display. it still works fine connected to an external monitor - or just opening the display half-way.

You're describing classic flexgate symptoms. The problem is well documented. The actual ribbon cable is soldered directly onto the display so only way to repair is replacing the entire display assembly.

The $120 ribbon cable repair they offer is unrelated to the problem.

SMH, can’t wait for the same thing happening to me and my 2017 $2k MBP… sorry OP that this is happening to you, it’s a ridiculous problem and it’s majorly fcked up Apple won’t stand up for it.

Your symptoms are classic 'flex-gate' and are all over the internet.

The person you spoke to adopted the typical "you're the first person to report this [hugely well known] issue" damage-limitation technique.

The flexgate problem was reportedly fixed by 2019. Doesn't mean there can't still be problems with the cable, but 2019 models aren't covered in the replacement program.
