I've had my new 2020 27" i7 iMac for about 4 days now, and I use external speakers connected to the headphone jack.

Every time I restart or wake from sleep, the sound comes from the internal speakers rather than the external speakers. Of course, if I disconnect and reconnect the external speakers, the sound goes back to them.

This new iMac is a replacement for a late 2015 27" iMac, which NEVER did this. I migrated the system from that older iMac when I first set up the new iMac, so the settings should be the same.

Are there troubleshooting steps to do here?

Maybe try setting the external speakers as the output speakers in "Audio MIDI Setup", which can be found in /Applications/Utilities .

Thanks for the tip. I'll give that a try. I had forgotten about that utility.
