I picked up a cheap used 2020 iMac 27" being the last of the Intel era (for Windows 10 Bootcamp) and currently still supported with MacOS 26 Tahoe.

Short version: I am unable to install any macOS versions past Monterey 12.7.4 on to it. Every installation fails with the error message;

"An error occurred installing macOS.

You can try again to complete the installation."

Long version:

First thing I did was boot into Internet Recovery (Option-Command-R for the latest version of macOS that's compatible), erase the internal HDD and then attempted to reinstall macOS onto it. If I recall correctly it already has macOS 15 Sequoia installed and this is the version that Internet Recovery was attempting to reinstall. I attempted this five times and every time it failed with the same error message.

Followed the Apple Support Articles Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support https://support.apple.com/en-us/102539 and Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support to reset the PRAM/NVRAM and SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/102605 after the initial installation errors.

I read the Apple Support Article If an error occurs while updating or installing macOS – Apple Support (AU) https://support.apple.com/en-au/102531 and confirmed that there's enough storage space (400+GB free), confirmed the internet connection (have tried both Ethernet and wifi, and speeds are excellent), etc.

Then created a macOS 15 Sequoia Bootable Install Disc on a 32GB USB 3.0 Sandisk thumb drive following Apple Support Article Create a bootable installer for macOS – Apple Support (AU) https://support.apple.com/en-au/101578 , but while it could be selected as the Boot Drive, it would then cycle through into Internet Recovery instead (perhaps due to the Apple T2 Security Chip?).

Wasn't able to check and change the Startup Security Utility settings due to not having a macOS account details, so

Booted into the Option-Shift-Command-R macOS Recovery over the internet and installed the version of macOS that came with the Mac originally. This was the first successful install - Catalina 10.15 installed perfectly.

Then upgraded to Big Sur 11 - installed perfectly. Then upgraded to Monterey 12.7.4. I attempted to update to Ventura 13 but the Installation App was damaged and is currently redownloading now.

Further attempts to upgrade from Monterey 12.7.4 to Sonoma 14, Sequoia 15 or Tahoe 26 have all resulted in that error.

I followed Apple Support Article About Startup Security Utility on a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip – Apple Support (AU) https://support.apple.com/en-au/102522 and confirmed that the settings in Startup Security Utility are set to:
Secure Boot - No Security, and
Allowed Boot Media - Allow booting from external or removable media
so there should be no issue booting from a USB device.

A family member has another 2020 iMac of the same specs running macOS Tahoe 26.0.1. I used SuperDuper to clone there hard drive, then attempted to boot up on the SuperDuper clone with the aim of then cloning that onto my Mac's internal HDD. When doing so it states:
"A software update is required to use this startup disk.
You can update now or select another startup disk."
When attempting to update a similar error message is received to that of attempting to install a later version of macOS:
"An error occurred installing the update.
Try again or select another startup disk."

Options left to try:

Wait for Venutra 13 to download again (about 3 hours remaining as the Apple Server seems to be so slow!) and attempt that again. If that works, then keep trying to update to the newer macOS versions.

Revive or restore Mac firmware per How to revive or restore Mac firmware – Apple Support (AU) https://support.apple.com/en-au/108900 although I don't think my issues align with the effects of this fault listed.

SuperDuper clone to the iMac's internal by placing the iMac into Target Disc Mode and connecting via Thunderbolt 3/4/5 USB-C cable to another 2020 iMac of the same specs. I'd need to find a local supplier for a Thunderbolt cable.

Questions:

Is there something I'm doing wrong here? I've not previously had issue installing or updating macOS versions.

Is there a way to get any actual details about what the error is or the cause during the installing macOS?

Is there a key change between Catalina 10.15/Big Sur 11/Monterey 12 to Sonoma 14/Sequoia 15/Tahoe 26 that could be the cause of this issue? (Ventura 13 left off the list as not tested yet)

If you have access to another working 2020 Intel 27" iMac, swap the memory modules into the troublesome iMac. Reset NVRAM on boot.
You can also run Apple Diagnostics on the finicky iMac

Thanks Bigwaff. I had not thought of either of those options.

Perhaps related but the first thing I did on arrival of this iMac was to fit it with 4 x 8GB OWC memory. I'll try removing these and refitting the OEM memory back in.

Hi, are you able to plug ethernet in or connect to wifi once this error pops up and click try again?

Just managed to fish out a 2020 I have in stock that hasn't had update for Sonoma to get a pic - if this is what you're experiencing then it is just that it needs to have a connection to the internet to update. So yeah, ethernet or connect to wifi on the top right when you're on this screen.

OP:

Some thoughts...

Is there currently 3rd-party RAM in it? If so...
Put the FACTORY RAM back into it, and try again.
Do this before you try anything else.

I didn't read everything, but are you trying to upgrade over wifi?
If so, don't do that.
Connect to wired ethernet. Move the iMac if you have to.

Did you COMPLETELY ERASE the internal drive?
If not, boot from the USB flashdrive (or internet recovery) and do so.
MAKE SURE when you open disk utility that you go to the view menu and choose "show all devices", or you won't see the internal SSD.

That is the error that I am receiving, yet. But I don't think it should be an internet connection unless there's a hardware fault dropping it out or something during the instal?

The iMac is connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Speedtest by Ookla results on it are Download 302.98 Mbps and Upload 20.83 Mbps.
If I change to the wifi network (it’s approximately 3 metres from the Apple Time Capsule) the results are Download 128.89 Mbps and Upload 16.43 Mbps.

Yes. My multiple initial attempts installing macOS Sequoia via Internet Recovery (Option-Command-R for the latest version of macOS that's compatible) all involved using Disk Utility to Erase the internal HDD first. I also then ran First Aid over it.

Then I booted into the Option-Shift-Command-R macOS Recovery over the internet, used Disk Utility to Erase again and installed the version of macOS that came with the Mac originally. This was the first successful install - Catalina 10.15 installed perfectly.

Please try connection via WiFi instead of Ethernet if you haven’t already and see if the fault still happens

If you haven’t already done so, revive the firmware using Configurator. You may also be able to see more detail about the actual issue by typing command-L while the installer is running, depending on when it fails.

I'll have a read of Apple Support article How to revive or restore Mac firmware https://support.apple.com/en-au/108900 and figure out how to do that.
I think the USB-C charging cable from my MacBook Pro 16 should be a suitable cable to use for it.

It fails at this point of the installation:

It seems to generally be with either 8, 48 or 59 minutes remaining.

I'm not familiar with Command + L so will check that out.

How are you trying to install 14? Via the App Store (i.e. running the installer from inside the 13 installation), or some other way?
Yes, as you've described. The computer is booted up and running Ventura 13.7.8. I've used the App Store and Settings Software Update to download the later macOS installation app. Once download I've attempted to run it.

I've also tried this whist booted in Safe Mode and same issue.

Is there a better way?

Take the OWC RAM out, and put the factory RAM back in...
Have just done. The delay was that I needed to go and collect it back from a family members 2020 iMac as we put it in there to fill up there two vacant spots.
After refitting I reset PRAM/NVRAM.

Interesting change, when I've attempted to run the macOS Sonoma and Sequoia installers I am unable to proceed due to error "The volume cannot be downgraded."
I have double check in Apple About This Mac and it's definitely listing Ventura 13.7.8 as the current installed OS.
I've also checked Setting Software Update to ensure there's no updates available.

I'm currently downloading Tahoe 26.0.1 through Software Update again and then will try that.

Yes, type command-L and it will open a log window as the installer tries to progress. Show us what that log says.

I decided to do a Firmware Restore in DFU mode. As part of this it downloaded Mac Software Update (which the Firmware Recovery doesn't seem to) and I was hopeful this update will take and resolve the other updating issues...
The Firmware Restore was successful and it booted into Internet Recovery and downloaded the necessaries. It's then gone into Recovery Assistant automatically. Unfortunately it's triggered the Activation Lock on the device. I've reached out to the seller and will now be awaiting there response. It looks like it can be removed remotely per Apple Support Articles Activation Lock for Mac – Apple Support (AU) and How to remove Activation Lock – Apple Support (AU) . Hopefully after that I can finally progress to resolution with installing later versions of macOS.
