semi-Pro audio and Video wannabe here. Have had a 2017 i5 iMac for 3+ years with 1TB SSD. Runs great but 1TB was quickly not enough to fit all the sample libraries. Been using a 2TB T5 for a long time (1/2 full) with zero problems or any noticeable slowdown. As i am ready to trade my 2017 i5 in for the 2020 i7 stock model (for the huge upgrade in Cores) I see no trade in bump for all the $$ I put towards the SSD upgrade ($600 for the internal SSD). I currently use ~500GB internally for two OS boot drives but I could see going to just one and being OK with the stock 512 on the 2020 27" i7 with anticipation of moving to an ARM machine within 3 years. So... Is it worth it anymore to pay the upgrade costs for the internal SSD upgrade (2TB it would be) if i can live with 512 internally?

A different option would be to upgrade to 1 TB because the additional cost is not that much and it increases the resale value if you decide to sell it in five years. The upgrade cost for 2 TB is quite a lot and there is a chance that even that won't be enought anymore in the future. An external SSD would be more flexible.

I had a similar thought - also lets the new one be the same as I use now. At the same time an X5 2TB is the same price as the upgrade and can migrate to future machines... Value wise the Apple trade in program is fairly attractive for future upgrades and does not escalate much with upgrades.
