Hey everyone I’m looking to upgrade from my 2012 iMac.

I’ve been looking at getting either one of the two options

Option 1: 2020 iMac
Nano texture
10 core i9
8gb ram (going to upgrade myself to 128gb)
5700xt 16gb
2tb ssd

Option 2: 2017 iMac Pro
10 core Xeon
64gb
Pro Vega 56
2tb ssd

I work in architecture, 3D rendering (Only CPU, but would like to possibly try out GPU rendering in the future maybe, although not a huge priority), as well as music production.

Overall my software usage would be as follows: Archicad, autocad, rhino, sketchup, cinema4d, Vray, Adobe (PS, ID, IL, Lightroom, occasionally premiere and after effects), Ableton. I’ll also want to boot camp windows for revit + 3dsmax.

Other factors are that I can get a 7% discount from my office on Apple products. Prior to this knowledge I had factored a budget of $7609aud for the 2020 imac ($6639aud) + OWC ram ($970aud). With this in mind I can either:
  • save $465 on the 2020 imac + third party ram for total $7144 (AUD)
  • Go over budget by $360 on the iMac Pro for total $7969(AUD)

I've been doing a lot of reading on the new iMac being superior than the iMac Pro base model, and with the nano texture i had decided to go for the 2020 imac. Once i found out about the 7% discount as well as the glitching issues with the 5700xt on the Imac, i had started to somewhat consider the imac pro. I also love the space grey colour! Anyway, not i'm at a bit of a lost on what to get. Any help would be great!!

Even if you get the regular 5700. It's still a superior GPU to the Vega 56. Spec wise the regular iMac is still faster with a nicer display. Although given the heavy 3D usage you are doing. You may want to opt for a tried and true workstation with better thermal management. Like the iMac Pro.

As I understand the glitching issue with the 5700 xt it affects a minority of users. Which is little comfort if you get stuck with one and suffer downtime.

It's too bad the MP is out of your budget. As that with a 4K or 5K display sounds ideal. Given the ability to upgrade RAM and GPU.

From what I have read, with any extreme cpu usage on the iMac, it will sound like a hairdryer.
Whereas the pro is designed to cope with it and should run quiet.
You also have the option to add an eGPU if you need more than the vega56.

owning both systems at 10 core
go with the iMac Pro better cooling sound, more tb usb c ports, compatibility with 32 bit app by macOS mojave dual booting stay away from Vega 56 option has some graphical glitches in latest os

apple saying software issue after 4 weeks in store for 3 weeks and fourth week they replaced it only fix for now rum macOS 10.14 or current trying Big Sur beta , still mac os catalina has graphical glitches
look at 64x or 64
