My 2020 Intel iMac makes a faint ticking noise similar to the seconds hand of an analog clock and I need to decide if its normal or something to get checked out before my AC+ runs out in the coming weeks. It’s something I noticed within the first month of ownership almost 3 years ago, but it doesn’t seem to have gotten worse since then. The machine has otherwise performed flawlessly with zero unexplained shutdowns or crashes.
It’s worth noting that this noise is only audible in a silent room and I have to put my ear right above the USB ports to hear it. In addition, the machine has to be in a sleep or a powered off (but still connected to the mains) state, although the frequency of this noise is noticeably faster during the sleep state.
If you have a 5K Intel machine, could you do a quick check to see if your machine makes the same noise? I’d mostly like to avoid the hassle of lugging the iMac to the store and any potential damage that may occur during diagnostics or repair.
