Does anyone think Apple could update the iPad Air in 2020 with Face ID and an all screen Liquid Retina display? If so, would Apple change the size of the display again? I don’t think they would change the actual physical dimensions of the Air though since now the 10.2” is compatible with the Air’s Keyboard.

I highly doubt it will happen in 2020. Relax it just got refreshed.

I do think eventually, apple will adopt Face ID on there entire ipad lines, just not anytime soon. If this is the case, they would have to resize the screen of the air/mini/iPads.

Anyone think a 13/15inch pros would ever be a thing?

Apple said Touch ID is still a great technology for iPads so I’m not very confident with Face ID being built in. It would interfere with iPad Pro sales.

I'm sure it will happen eventually, but not sure about 2020.

Maybe not in 2020, but the next Air will probably have Face ID. Just guessing, since the Air 3 inherited the 2nd gen Pro 10.5 design. The Air 4 would likely inherit the 3rd gen Pro 11 design. Or not. Who knows.

My guess is it will remain the same but with a couple added features and updated hardware. Apple does the bare minimum to make people think it’s new and improved. iPad 7 for example. iPad 6 hardware shoved into the 10.5 design but with bigger bezels and 1st gen Touch ID and the A10 chip. 2 GB of RAM as well.

By next year the iPhone 8 should be entirely discontinued from the lineup, completing the transition for all iPhones having Face ID. Add to that, dropping the price of the iPhone 11 to $699, and also the iPhone XR to $599, making it the cheapest entry Face ID device today. Assuming next year that the iPhone XR drops another $100, down to $499, they will have hit the iPad Air price point so I don't see why they wouldn't be able to start trickling the technology down to the iPad line. I understand not adopting Face ID to the iPad or iPad mini (at least for a while), but the Air has to be next in line for Face ID treatment, either in 2020 or 2021!

iPhone 8 is meant to be replaced by a new 'SE' equivalent model (so same shell but updated internals) between that and at least the 10.2" iPad it looks like the traditional form factor will still be with us a few years yet. I wouldn't expect the Air to be redesigned before either the 5th gen or 6th gen (the current being the 3rd), so at least a couple of years away yet. I think apple will want to get a good couple of years' usage out of the modified 10.5" form factor before they move it on, and also allow the Pro model to evolve further.

I would think so.

Don't think so.

iPad Air (2019) fills a good price segment and was clearly designed to maximize the existing supply chain. It's a Tim Cook product. It might get new colors and a 512GB option, but I don't think it will get "Pro" features.

I don’t see it happening. The current Air was the previous 10.5” iPad Pro, which turned into the 11”. If the Air followed that newer design it would essentially be like the 11” Pro.

Though with time I imagine they’ll all have the newer design and Face ID.
