I went through the process for trading in my 13" MBP with M1 chip, 8GB RAM, and 512GB SSD and they said the product was not eligible for the trade-in but could be recycled??
Does that make any sense? Is it because the machine is too new to consider?
Does anyone else have this happen?
I was considering trading it in on one of the newer MBP expected to arrive this fall, but I may have to consider selling privately.
Thank you

Apple doesn't seem to allow trade-ins on current models. I know I've checked my M1 MBA several times and it always comes up as untradeinable. I probably would have traded it in on a current M1 MBP already if I could.

And no, I don't want to go to the bother of selling it outright -- what a PITA.

I suspect we will be able to trade ours in when new models come out though, at least I hope so...

Ok, that makes sense to me. I hate selling things privately. Most of the time, it works out fine, but I have had a few instances where the person became a problem. One guy decided he didn't want the camera lens he bought from me. There was nothing with it, he just decided he didn't want it anymore!

Appears, Mac wants to sell the new before wanting the old, which from a company standpoint makes sense, but... I'm curious, will the newer unit be that all much better than your current one? And if so how?

For me yes, my M1 MBA constantly gets hot and throttles the CPU too much. (Virtual machine work), so the MBP's active cooling would help that. A better, brighter, screen would be nice as well. Basically I don't use my MBA as is...

That remains to be seen, if not a decent performance improvement, and more RAM, I might sit it out.

I see, ram is cheap, so why not more ram now and see if that helps? I have my MBP 15 on an Apple elevated stand with plenty of ventilation, i'm running two additional monitors, kinda funky, but never any heat issues, its a 2012 Apple says its OLD like me HA!and my SSD 512, NVDIA and all still keeps humming! kinda like I'm afraid to move it! but making plans...

You can't add RAM to an M1 Mac, it's all soldered in. I have 16G for my MBA already anyway, and that's all the M1 supports...

It can’t be sold yet. Sell it via eBay or wait until the newer models come out.

You can trade it in with CashForYourMac.com and MacMeAnOffer.com though. Both are reputable vendors that many MR members have used. I did a trade for my M1 MBA this with Cash For Your Mac, and I've traded with them previously. Excellent customer service. Both companies' trade prices are often higher than Apple's.
