2020 MBP (Intel) Battery Swollen

Welp, didn’t notice it until we got the wife a new MBA yesterday. It’s the 4 port USB C model, bought new, and never even left the house ha. Looks like the swelling is on the bottom towards the front so the chassis didn’t wobble but just kind of leaned back. You have to put a decent amount of pressure on the front to get it to tilt forward.

Called Apple and have a genius bar appointment today but I was very adamant about making sure this was documented just in case they try and make me pay for it. I was going to trade it in as well so really hope they chalk it up to a manufacturer defect.

I don’t see why you wouldn’t have to pay for it, if the computer is not still covered under AppleCare+. It’s not uncommon for this to happen in computers which run primarily on external power, but it’s not so widespread that there’s an extended warranty or service program for battery replacement.

Agreed but who knows in this day and age. I don’t have AppleCare so just really hope they don’t push situations like this as a reason for consumers to buy it in order to make it feel like it’s their fault for not having AppleCare for a defect. I can see it already;

“Don’t have AppleCare? Sorry that will be $$$ but maybe get it on your new MBA so you don’t have this problem again”.

Curious if anyone has gone through this and if there was any push back.

Not all the time but prob 95% of the time. Would still argue that’s a pretty weak argument if someone tries to blame it on that.

No idea, turned it off as soon as I noticed. Apple can deal with it.

*Update* Apple visit is done. When the advisor found out I was just going to trade it in on the one I bought yesterday he went ahead a processed the trade in as is and applied the credit toward the recent purchase.

Said it wasn’t that bad, after spinning it on the table ha, and it was a waste of time to do a repair just to do a trade in.

This is an old superstition. Macs regulate their own charging, they do not overcharge.
Most likely it was a deftect and/or battery was end of life.

I wonder if/to what degree the swelling had an impact on how much you got for the trade-in.

None. I did it on the Apple website before I went it and answered the questions like nothing was wrong with it. Got the same value in the store since they use the same system.
