Lately I've been noticing that my [16 M1 Max] battery life isn't as good as it used to be a few weeks ago so I decided to have a look.

I'm at 34 cycles currently.

Cycles and Maximum Capacity (aka Battery Health) are visible About this Mac > System Report > Hardware Power

System Preferences -> Battery > Battery Health is reporting 98%.

You can get "raw" data by running "ioreg -l -w0 | grep -i capacity" in the terminal:

$ ioreg -l -w0 | grep -i capacity
"NominalChargeCapacity" = 8694
"MaxCapacity" = 100
"DesignCapacity" = 8694
"AppleRawMaxCapacity" = 8076

8076 / 8694 = 92.8%

This calculation has been steadily dropping, two charge cycles ago it was 94%.
This is the calculation used by apps like Coconut battery.

Is anyone else having issues, what are you cycle counts and battery health at?

Would love to know everyone's stats even if you aren't having/noticing battery issues.

My M1 Pro is at 8659. Only 5 cycles counted, which is only 3 more than when I got about the beginning of November. Don't think it was ever as high as 8694. I keep it plugged in.

I'm at 40 cycles. 100% full charge capacity. This fluctuates a bit between 86XX mAh to a bit over 8700 which it is right now (8723). I got it at launch (same as you, M1 Max 16"). I've been using Aldente to minimize cycles and keep the soc around 80% most of the itme.

Your battery health certainly seems to have gone quicker but cycles are not everything. Charge to 100% often? Keep the soc at 100% for long periods of time? Let it discharge fully? Do you use high power quick charge often? These things may affect it as well.

I'd recommend you try a battery calibration - charge full, hold 1h, discharge to below 10%, charge full, hold 1h - use normally. You can also reset smc etc. Maybe this adjusts it.

Regardless - warranty should cover this in case it deteriorates fast and it can be replaced.

Sorry to jump in here, but is that the free Aldente, or the paid version?

I'm using the paid version. No brainer insta buy for me. As a developer myself I'm also happy to support the people behind it.

The functionality of managing/limiting the soc which is key to battery health is the same though in the free and paid versions I believe. There is additional built in functionality to calibrate in the paid version but that's easy to replicate manually as I described.

Cheers .... I'll get the paid version. Seems ~£20 well worth it.
