I have a appointment with the Apple Store next Monday to look at a network issue. The ethernet will dropout sometimes while uploading and the it will not switch different ethernet connections. Also the Wifi will not switch different SSIDs. Are these two problems on the same card?

Stupid question, what do you mean by dropping out on your Ethernet? The iMac only has one Ethernet port on the power adapter, could you clarify what you mean by switching to another Ethernet connection.

With the wifi what happens when you click on another wifi network?

When using the ethernet with wifi off and network preferences open it will go from connected to not connected for a second and then switch back to connected. It may 30 mins to do. It's not the ethernet cable.

With the wifi on say you are on your home ISP wireless SSID and you change to another SSID. It will indicate in wifi setting you are connected to this other SSID but it did not switch to because IP address lookup is still your home IP address.

OP:

Another "Fishrrman stupid question™", but have you tried powering OFF your ISP's modem/router, then repowering it and let the whole service "come up again" ...?

Then again, you might change out the ethernet cable between the iMac power supply and your modem/router -- or even just swap it "end-for-end" (assuming that's possible).

Another thing to try:
Open the network preference pane.
Click on "ethernet" (upper left), then click the "-" sign (bottom left) to REMOVE it.
Now, restart.
When you get restarted and back to the finder, open network pref pane again.
This time, click the "+" sign (bottom left) and ADD a new ethernet connection.
You never know, this might help...
