2021 iMac storage expansion

I just got my new iMac today and opted for 512gb, and realize I underestimated my backup from my old iMac. Only 300gb was used according to the specs on my iMac, but the backup is way over that.

Is it possible to use an external ssd to connect to the iMac and make it part of the Mac HD and transfer the backup to that external HD?

Divide-and-conquer works better. Put Photo/Music libraries, data archives, etc on the external with applications and user directories on the internal as normal.
