I used GoodNotes for about ~15 minutes, and the battery life dropped from 82% to 67% (about 14% decrease, a percent per minute almost). Background refresh apps was OFF. No keyboard attached. No case.

I've since changed my Mail settings from Fetch to Manual.

Is this normal battery drain?

This is a completely new iPad device, so I don't understand why it's decreasing so fast. I used GoodNotes5 on my previous iPad with noticeably better battery drain. This new iPad doesn't seem to handle it! It even gets warm as I write with the Apple Pencil (which, on my older device, took hours of writing to get that warm if at all).

I would make sure everything has completed syncing, especially iCloud Photos, Messages in the cloud, etc.. I doubt that Mail setting will change much. Use the Battery section of the Settings app to monitor what's using power. It can shed light on GoodNotes or another app being a culprit.

This isn't the sort of battery life I have ever experienced with an iPad. Every iPad has provided anywhere from 8-15 hours of actual screen on time.

I have seen a similar battery drain with the Nebo notes app that I’ve been using for a while. I need to do some more testing though as I’ve just started writing more on this device.

I’ll see if I find the time to work in Goodnotes later.
