I suffered through 3 miserable years with the butterfly keyboard on my 2018 Macbook Pro. I went through one keyboard replacement to address many keys with key repeat and key delay issues, only to have those problems recur on the new keyboard within weeks. I was so excited to finally get back to a rational keyboard design with the new 2021 MBP because I mistakenly thought it would put those problems behind me (I have a 16" model).

What I’m finding is that this keyboard has similar issues. They aren’t quite as bad, although this keyboard only has about a week of use on it so far! The key repeat problems are when you type, say, a phrase like “hello there” but end up with “hello tohere” — the “o” getting repeated by the keyboard/system (not by me). I also see the key repeat happen more immediately sometimes (e.g. getting “immediatelyy” instead of “immediately”). Key delay issues happen when I type a word like “more” but get “mroe”.

Note, I’m a 100+ wpm typer who can type 100% accuracy all day long on my 2015 MBP. IOW, it's the keyboard (and/or its software). As another example, if I type a careful s-SPACE-s-SPACE-etc I'll get something like this some % of the time: "s s s s ss s s s s s s s s"

I presumed this nonsense was resolved with the new keyboard design, but apparently not. Are others seeing this too, or is this only me? Trying to decide if I should send it in or ... not sure what. I'm not near an Apple Store unfortunately, so these issues are more of a challenge.

I've had the new MBP for a few weeks and I didn't encountered any issues with my keyboard, and I didn't see any major keyboard issues with other users so far, so I think your device is faulty

I would first try testing your MBP with an external keyboard. You could also check how the built-in keyboard responds in different applications (say, a word processor, TextEdit, Notes, and a browser). Then you might be able to narrow down the source of the problem.

If your machine is within the warranty period and the problem is caused by either the built-in keyboard itself or a manufacturing flaw elsewhere in the MBP, I would contact Apple for a replacement. I've had a repeating key problem before, with an external third-party keyboard. So I know how annoying it is. It's unacceptable with new hardware.

I have seen this on my 16" M1 Pro, but only a couple of times and a reboot has fixed it so I put it down to some sort of bug rather than a hardware fault.

Does it matter which application you're in? I occasionally see some of the Microsoft web apps behaving very strangely with typing but again, software rather than hardware.

I received the new MBP M1Pro for work and noted immediately that it has a hypersensitive '2' key. If I run my finger lightly across all keys, this is the only one that registers a keystroke, but it should not. It causes repeats randomly if you're not careful with it. Hopefully it is not something that will expand to affect other keys.

Given that it's 2022 this is a real PIA. After waiting 4 months for it to arrive after ordering I'm left wondering if it's worth putting up with.

I thought Apple had made strides with their keyboard issues, this being the first in a decade that I've thought worth the upgrade, for keyboard and port configurations - writing this on my own 2012 MBP - 10 years and no key issues here.

I haven't noticed any keyboard issues on my 16/1TB 16" M1-Pro.

Yikes, I hope we don't see more of this. if it was my guess I’d say there’s something under there (dust/dirt) or it’s just defective

The new MBP 2021 uses the same keyboard switch as the iMac keyboards now. If your having issues, its the hardware that came with the laptop is faulty( bad or broken switch) or it could be a software issue.

The swiches are scissor switchs just like the iMac's. I have no issues on my 16" MBP 2019 which also uses the magic keyboard like the new 2021's and keyboard works with no problems.

Had this 16" MBP for more than 2 years now.

I also experience some double keypress issues (usually one right after the other, say with the 'i' key) on a 16" M1 Pro. It's not clear whether it's mechanical or a bug, but it seems to happen with certain keys more than others but it will happen perhaps 1-3 times during a full day of typing. Enough to be noticeable and annoying but not enough to be certain it's a hardware fault.
