iPad Pro 2023 iPad Pro 12.9: What to Expect and Should You Wait?

I need your advice. My iPad Pro 12.9 (1st generation) is pretty slow now, and it's time to upgrade. I don't know if it's a good idea to wait until 2024 for the pricey OLED with M3 CPU, but the last upgrade of the iPad had an M2 CPU. Do you think there will be a 2023 version with a small upgrade worth waiting for, or should I buy this 142-day-old iPad released in October 2022?

Honestly, Apple certified refurb M1 12.9 at a good discount sounds like a better option to me.

If someone (some few) really bought into the idea of the iPad as a laptop replacement, then yes, I can maybe see upgrading, but I think the Pros have been and still are overpowered for what they do.

I'm glad I don't have the job in Cupertino trying to figure out good reasons for people to upgrade those Pro models. Apple needs to figure out how to make them more useful.

My suggestion - let them run virtualized macos.

I suggest you list some of your requirements. Any new iPad is pure speculation on features until release but the rumours are OLED and M3 (as you have mentioned) and I hope landscape camera.

Me? I really want external monitor support (extended) which is in Mx iPads even now, so why am I not pulling the trigger? OLED and landscape camera are enough for me to hang on - at the very worse I can simply get a previous model if the spec bump is not enough.

Just kidding, I agree with letting iPad run virtualized macOS. The VM framework already exists in Ventura - would love to see that show up in iPadOS.

The 1st generation iPad Pro 12.9 was released in 2015 and has A9X + 4GB RAM. Base storage is 32GB.

I can definitely see why someone would want to upgrade from that.

I'd say your only option is this years M2 12.9 Pro as the M3 Pro will most definitely have OLED. I doubt Apple will offer non OLED Pro's as well as OLED with the M3

the Next model will probably not arrive until spring 2024. Or very late in 2023 at the earliest.

Personally i'd just buy the M2 12.9 Pro.. It's a fabulous device and the mini-led screen is wonderful.. Waiting for the next version isn't going to diminish the M1/M2 versions as they are already overkill for a tablet.. Plus as @Isengardtom stated it could be late this year or next spring before a updated Pro will be released

My feeling is that the M2 models are the last ones before a substantial redesign, so it might be worth waiting if you can. Or getting a good deal on an M1.

That being said, nobody really knows.

i tend not to buy the first gen of any new product. The future OLED iPads is using a process in their screen design that I feel is still kinda unproven. However, the current M1/M2 has been around for a while. You know what you’re getting, and the screens look amazing (they really pop). I would get an M2 and you’ll be really happy with it. As a side note, I’m one of those weirdos that replaced the laptop (boring devices imo) with an iPad a long time ago, and just can’t go back. I will say though theres two main hardware things I hope the coming iPads adopt. MagSafe for one. An entire device whos power AND data transfer port is one insert, can feel a bit unnerving. And the camera placement is a bit weird in landscape as the hand covers it accidentally all the time. other than that, the device is beautiful.

How come this attitude pops up in very thread about iPads? If you are not the target for a iPad Pro stick to other iPads and leave comments for those who for some reason needs the iPad Pro. Most of these people knows exactly why they bought the iPad Pro and what for and it is not to run MacOS on it. We use Macs for that or don't need MacOS.

PS. I have not for a very long time experienced a too fast computer. DS

IMO the best value is currently still a used 2018 iPad Pro 12.9", if you don't have any particular requirements. I bought one last year, and originally also had the 1st-gen 12.9".

As one of those few: I use my iPad for 99% of my professional needs, and for some entertainment. No serous photo- or video-editing, so that may be a reason to upgrade I don’t know of, but I would say I am a heavy user. And in my experience my iPad Pro 12.9” M1 can handle everything I throw at it and STILL make a cheese sandwich for itself and eat it without a sweat

Personally I would ditch the camera entirely, so the placement doesn’t bother me 😁 I prefer the iPhone camera by far.

I would really love at least one, maybe more identical usb c ports on both sides. I use the keyboard with usb c to charge, but that is just not enough, I need more data without an ugly dongle

The sixth generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro is still fairly recent. And probably past the point where any obvious generational defects are being discovered for the first time. If you are worried about not having the latest and greatest at any point, I'm gonna tell you right now that that's silly. Get the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro and you'll be happy with it. Or, alternatively, get an Apple Certified Refurbished fifth generation model with M1. Both will last you a very long time. Otherwise, why are you worried about features you don't even know whether or not you'll even care about?
