I'm trying to figure out whether or not to sell my mom my "old" iPhone 15 Pro or just have her wait for the next SE. She's currently on the 13 Mini. I don't quite get how it will fit in. Right now the SE is the cheapest phone Apple sells, and I assume the next SE will also be the cheapest phone, but it will also likely have the A18 chip in it. If it's a $500 iPhone with an A18, why would someone pay $600 for the 14? Or do you think they'll discontinue some older devices when the next SE comes out? What did they do last time. I think that when the SE comes out, it will be a great price performer.

I presume it’ll have an older chipset in it however, like you, I don’t know where the SE4 will fit in as it’s becoming more and more premium when compared to the previous budget models with no home button, a better camera, OLED and either the A17 or A18.

Yeah I guess my thought was that they'd put the A18 in there, and then basically not update it for 3 years, and the A18 would still be reasonable in a few years, and they'd still be making the chip then, but who knows. Well I mean someone at Apple knows.

Does your mother want a new phone? Does she want a larger phone? If she does, does she mind about the increased weight? I guess that becomes more of an issue if she's elderly.

I'm really not wishing to be rude here but the rest seems that it might be you trying to justify buying yourself one of the new 16 range. :) Nothing wrong with that but you could just trade the 15 Pro in if that's the situation.

I think there's too much unknown and assumed about the next SE yet. It might well be suitable for your mum but, if she were my mum, I'd see if she's happy with what she's got first. And if she isn't, her money might be better saved for that SE.

To me, to be honest there doesn't seem to be much to gain for either of you moving up at the moment.

I know what you’re saying but the A18 will cannibalise sales.

Apple, for instance, gave the iPhone 15 Pro the A17 chipset and the standard iPhone 15 the A16 chipset.

They did the same with the iPhone 14 line.

Yeah I mean I upgrade my phone every year. I typically sell it on the open market. I don't need justification. It's just something I do to stay current. She's ready to upgrade to a newer phone as well. I'm trying to figure out if I sell her my phone, but then she's on the A17 with a 1 year old battery, is that a worse deal for her than paying less for the iPhone SE... but I'm not sure how gimped that would be compared to the 15 Pro... It's possible that a brand new iPhone SE 2025 will be a better overall device for her.

Sure. I'm just looking at history. The current iPhone SE has an A15. At the time it was released, the fastest phones available were the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini. They also had A15 chips. If history repeats itself, which it often does, Apple would release the iPhone SE with an A18 chip in early 2025, and then later in 2025, the flagship phones would have A19 chips.

History doesn’t mean much to Apple as they’ve changed the naming convention for their lineups along with having 2 separate chips in their regular/pro devices. We just have to wait for more information. I’d be interested in the SE 2025 if it has an A18.

Then I would sell her your 15 Pro because of the better cameras. Mum's love taking photos and she'll be able to film better videos of her family and friends than with an SE4. And she can do all that *this* holiday season. No waiting.

I don't think a year of battery use and a potentially slight difference in processor capability is going to bother her at all. And if it does, well by then you'll want to upgrade again and you can repeat.

I bet she'll love your 15 Pro.

When the next generation iPhone 14-based iPhone SE launches next year (March?), Apple will presumably discontinue the 14 and 14 Plus. When the original iPhone SE launched in 2016, the iPhone 5S on which it was largely based was discontinued. When the second generation iPhone SE launched in 2020, the iPhone 8 on which it was largely based was discontinued. The third generation SE was also largely based on the iPhone 8 which had already been discontinued.

Therefore, if history repeats itself, the (March?) lineup would include the new SE, 15 and 15 Plus, 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.

I’m surprised to hear that the next SE will probably have an OLED screen. I was sure it would have the Liquid Retina LCD the XR/11 did (the next logical step price-wise after the “Home Button” design is finally gone), but with a newer chipset (likely the A18).

If it really does have an OLED screen I can see the price being quite a bit higher than the current SE. As some others have said, there will be next to no point to buying the 14/15 if this new SE costs less and has a newer chip.

My guess is that they will discontinue the 14 and 15 line iphone when the SE is being released. No point keeping them as rumors point towards better hardware than the 15 (aside from camera).

So i'm guessing that the product line will be something like this.

* iPhone 16 pro/16 pro Max
* iPhone 16/16max
* iPhone SE2025 and maybe SE2025max(unlikely)
* iPhone SE2022

The SE2022 will prob be discontinued tho.
Might be a case that they keep selling the 14 for a few more months to offer a phone with lightning for a while longer.

Yeah I bet you are close to correct. I do agree that they will discontinue the 2022 model, and they will probably just sell off the remaining stock of the 14, and then next fall, the lineup is super clear…

1. iPhone SE
2. iphone 16
3. iPhone 17
4. iPhone 17 Pro

if the rumors are correct, this also means that all phones sold would do apple intelligence by next fall.
