20GB used by Mac OS X???

I just got my MBP 1.83 and I'm a bit of a newbie to Mac OS X (sorry in advance )

Anyway, I was looking at it today and the Macintosh HD says "56.97 GB available." This is with a 76 GB HD. I've only put in one picture and a few CD's. That's it.

Could Mac OS X take up 20 GB?
What can I do to get some of that space back? I've heard about taking out the localization files, but I don't know how to do that.

Mac OS X itself doesn't take up 20Gb, but all the iLife apps do. Will you be using all of the iLife apps? List all the apps that you plan to use and then we can walk you through removing the unneeded ones. Especially an app like GarageBand takes up A LOT of space.

I actually think I'll be using them.
I might take off GarageBand if it takes up THAT much space.

I can always get them back from the install discs, right?

Mac OS X.4 (tiger) is 4.5 GBs in size with all languages/fonts/etc

Garageband is the Biggest app in iLife suite (soundtracks/Jampacks) that only is like 3Gb of space right there..<< IIRC
