I like their idea of releasing video of this thing to the public, so Iraq gets a load of what it does... 9 tons of extremely high grade explosives that can be mistaken as a nuclear blast...

I see some other uses for it too... When we capture Osama, we can tie him to one of these, and watch what happens... It would be kinda inhumane, but the bastard deserves it. Actually, he deserves worse, but seeing him go up in a 10000 foot plume of smoke would be satisfying...

I was able to view it for free off of CNN's website, I don't see what the big deal is.
no pun intended.

oh great, a bomb to mimic a nublear blast so Iraq will launch all of their nukes at us in retribution

"we'll meet again, don't know when...don't know when..."
The aliens have less and less time to come down and show us the way to peace and multiple orgasms as each day goes by.

I wonder if this particular weapon has a depleted uranium tip. Depleted Uranium is used for bunker busting and in certain armor piercing munitions.

""Oh great, a bomb to mimic a nublear blast so Iraq will launch all of their nukes at us in retribution"" I don't think so.

Yeah you're right, it kind of reminds me of the megahertz war, maybe weight is not the best way of measuring a bomb.

The Grand Slam was only as good as the bomber that carried it - The Avro Lancaster. Just a ten ton tube of TNT otherwise.

Anouncing that weapon as "woo heavy" is just another pointless piece of sensationalist news making. I thought I would be equally as pointless by beating irrelevant by 1000lbs.

as far as explosives go, do you really think 60 years would make a difference? wow, I learn something new everyday!

Also, you do realise the USAF just push it out of the back of a cargo plane, maybe they should dig out a Superfortress, failing that I suppose the US could ask to borrow the Memorial Flight Lancaster from the RAF. A few structural adjustments and they'd be good to go.:p

Here it is straight from the source:

The video's not that impressive though. There's a mushroom cloud and all, but there are no nearby objects or landmarks to give it a sense of scale.

It doesn't come anywhere close to mimicking a real nuclear blast. Little boy the smaller of the two nuclear bombs that was dropped on Japan was a 10-Kiloton bomb. That is it's yield was the equivalent of 10,000tons of TNT. That is a small nuclear bomb. The bomb they are testing here is only 10.5tons. That means the bomb they are testing is .0007 times as powerful as a small nuclear bomb. Also a nuclear blast of any size sets off a blinding initial blast that can not be duplicated by a conventional bomb.

I don't know, but if I hear a big boom, and see a mushroom cloud like the one this bomb makes, I'd start thinking it was a nuclear bomb...

Besides, they have smaller nuclear weapons these days that don't produce blasts nearly as big as the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Daisy Cutters create a large mushroom cloud also.
